Back in the early days of rock and metal, a striking sight often graced the stages: two massive bass drums positioned side by side. This look was undoubtedly imposing and contributed to the powerful sound. However, this configuration also had significant drawbacks. The setup, teardown, and transport of the two heavy drums alone presented a logistical challenge and a strain on the drummer.
Fortunately, some resourceful minds came up with the idea of developing a twin pedal (also called a double bass drum pedal). This innovation revolutionized double bass playing. Instead of two separate bass drums, a single drum is now played with two pedals and two beaters. The pedals are connected by a connecting rod, which transfers the movement of one foot to the other.
The advantages of the Twin Pedal are obvious:
Space saving: Instead of two large bass drums, only one is needed, which saves a huge amount of space on stage and during transport.
Body protection: The tedious transport of two bass drums is eliminated, which protects the drummer's back and joints.
Cost savings: Purchasing a twin pedal is significantly cheaper than buying and maintaining two bass drums.
Double bass: Not just for metal!
Double bass is often automatically associated with metal. However, this technique can be used in many musical genres and greatly enriches the sound.
More powerful fill-ins: Drum fills sound significantly more powerful, interesting and varied with double bass.
Dynamic grooves: Short double bass drum interjections into the groove give the rhythm an extra kick and provide more dynamics.
The advantage of distribution:
Another major advantage of playing with two feet is improved fluidity and balance. Movements are distributed between both feet, whereas previously one foot had to do all the work. This leads to greater precision, stamina, and a more relaxed playing experience.
Conclusion:
The twin pedal has fundamentally changed double bass playing, allowing drummers to achieve the powerful sound of two bass drums with significantly less effort. Whether in metal, rock, pop, or other genres, double bass is a versatile technique that enriches musical expression.
